We know how overwhelming it can be for persons living with spinal cord injury and their family and friends. The more we understand about spinal cord injury the more we can determine what the  most effective prevention strategies are and improve upon existing health and medical care that those affected by spinal cord injury receive."

- Bill Barrable, CEO, Rick Hansen Institute

Spinal cord injury is one of the greatest survivable catastrophes experienced by a human being.

Regardless of cause or age at injury, SCI has a devastating impact on an injured person's health and well-being, and far reaching consequences for individuals, their families and the health care system.

Required care is highly specialized and complex - including costs for acute, rehabilitative, emergency, primary mental health, home and long term care and adaptive equipment - resulting in substantial financial costs for governments.

In Canada, that cost is now estimated at $3.6 billion a year... and growing.

In five short years, and with government leadership, significant progress has been made in the field of SCI research, treatment and services in Canada. RHI's goals are to reduce the severity of injury, improve health care outcomes for people with spinal cord injury and reduce health care costs.

RHI aims to achieve our goals by leveraging a global network of like-minded individuals and organizations. We are committed to accelerating the translation of discoveries and best practices into improved treatments and quality of life for people with spinal cord injury.

We invite you to explore this section to learn more about what we do and our three core program areas: Translational Research, Best Practices Implementation and the Rick Hansen SCI Registry.
